ABC'S OF SENIOR CARE PLACEMENT
Considering placing your loved one in a residential/assisted living care community? To get started, you might spend a few minutes browsing the folloing suggestions, the "ABC's of Senior Care Placement":
AAssess the needs of your family member. Amany families do this with the help of family meetings, communications with other siblings and/or relatives, and getting involved in day to day activities with their loved one. Ask questions of each other:
- What are their medical, physical, emotional, and social needs?
- Are they happy in their surroundings, or are they showing signs of loneliness and distress - possibly slowly withdrawing from society when they were once actively involved?
- Are they taking their medications consistently and on time?
- Ins your family member living safely in their surroundings, or do they need ongoing assistance with daily needs?
- Does this person have an onset of dementia (50%) of all seniors over 85 experience at least mild cognitive loss). Will they need a specialized setting for this level of care?
BBuild your priority list and budget. After assessing your loved ones needs, be sure to write down what their needs are to clarify goals with yourself and your family.
At this time, it's also very important that you know your loved one's estimated income and assets; since this level is NOT covered by most medical insurances (NOTE: Long Term Care Insurance DOES cover this level of care).

DDedicate yourself to tour and compare at least 3 different communities which offer varying care and services. This will better educate you to the elder care industry as a whole.
EEstablish your likes and dislikes about each community toured. Discuss the one you like best with your loved one. As you do encourage them with what you LIKED about the chosen community. Escort them on a second visit at a time convenient for everyone. If the family member is cognitively able, ask and discuss their likes and dislikes of the community. Once again, encourage your family with the positive aspects of the community if you feel this is truly a right move for them.
FFollow up. Please take a few minutes to follow up with a call back to our office. Your opinions count! Family evaluations help provide better information to future families.
